Finding my place in the leadership development program
February 06 2024
When I put Principal at the top of my list of career prospects, it was because I wanted to be a part of a strong leadership development program with the opportunity to be challenged, further develop my leadership skills, and hone my knowledge as a subject matter expert. From Charlotte to Des Moines
As an early career individual, I saw Principal® as a reputable enterprise where I could continue my education and lay the foundation as a humble and open-minded leader. Every step of my journey has proven me to be correct in this assumption.
Being from Charlotte, North Carolina, making the choice to relocate to Des Moines, Iowa, was not the easiest, but what motivated me was the potential community I’d have access to. As I concluded my journey at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Principal employees made a very concerted effort to connect me with others to ease my worries about moving halfway across the country when I’d never been away from home longer than a few weeks. And when I arrived, I not only found myself in an inclusive community that cares about me as a person but also one with a tailored life-work approach.
A great place to work and a community that cares
As I’ve developed into a leader in my own right, I’ve learned the importance of community and inclusion. Within my first year at Principal, I met countless individuals—whom I’m grateful for—who helped me make the right connections, explained the intricacies of the businesses they support and their job functions, and shared leadership insights. I’ve been invited to other leaders’ homes for game nights, volunteered with new friends, and joined the amazing African American/Black employee resource group as its communications lead.
Now, entering my second year, I have the opportunity to co-lead a learning and development high-level initiative where we prioritize equipping each associate with the training, knowledge, and resources to help build up their organizational expertise and optimize their full potential as future leaders.
Thus far my experience has served as an amazing platform for me to experience leadership and culture within Principal. I’m proud to work for an organization where I’ve found a rhythm and an inclusive community that works for me.
